The appliances first appear in a carefully crafted visual setting a gray cyclorama, sculpted lighting, slow-motion shots, and fluid movements that highlight their lines, materials, and details. This presentation then gives way to scenes from everyday life where the characters’ reactions provide the humor.
A man discovers an unexpected piece of news while standing in front of the Ellipse washer-dryer set. A woman packs five lunches into an AVIVA refrigerator before realizing that tomorrow is a holiday. A slightly competitive brother-in-law busies himself in front of a KitchenAid range. A teenager finds the bowls that had gone missing from the house before wondering why the ASKO dishwasher is so quiet.
The films were directed by Sarah Boulais, alongside Pascal Chaumont, who served as both director and director of photography. Their approach uses the contrast between the product’s world and everyday life as the source of the films’ humor.
